Gmail was borne out of an internal mail system used by Google Inc back in 2004. In 2005, I remember being proud to have been one of the "lucky few" who have been invited.
It's not everyday that you see someone giving you 1GB of storage for e-mail. At that time, it was HUGE!
Honestly, me (and perhaps like most netizens) have kept tons of e-mail addresses; you name it - Yahoo, Altavista, Netscape, MSN, Hotmail, Rocketmail, etc - I had 'em all.
Slowly, I dumped most of it and only kept two, my Yahoo mail (which is the oldest I have) and my Gmail.
Which brings us back to the question: Why is a Gmail account better?
Here are some thoughts:
- THERE'S AN ECOSYSTEM - This is much like how Apple ruled the world. Got an iPod, you have to log in to iTunes. Got an iPhone or an iPad, you still have to log-in to iTunes to download, use and pay for content. Steve Jobs was the first preacher of "content is king" and being a visionary, he laughed all the way to the bank. The same is true with Google, Gmail and its vast products. With Gmail, you are instantly connected to Youtube, Google docs, Calendar, Google drive, Google Maps, Blogger, Analytics, Adwords and a whole gamut of useful cloud apps that you couldn't live without. That's the primary reason why Gmail shines above the rest
- ONE EMAIL TO REMEMBER - this is connected with the bullet-point above. You don't need to remember a LOT of emails, you simply have to keep one
- YOU CAN USE IT FOR CORPORATE MAIL TOO - a lot of startup business owners don't know this. But for a few dollars a month per user, you can use a gmail account with an "@yourbusiness.com" domain. How? Check it out here.
- IT SYNCS WELL WITH MOBILE - You can easily do it for Android and iOS, your email, calendars and contacts are easy to sync, backup and update. That's the reason I love this feature
- THEY 'EFFIN OWN ANDROID - A Gmail account will also make you use Google Play in all its glory. With Android, leading the way in smartphone OS, this is another "rule the world" business decision for the guys at Google.
Seems that Google is well poised to remain a corporate giant. With its vast ecosystem, simple apps and one of the first mega-corporations to embrace cloud technology, Google will be here to stay.
And a Gmail account is the heart of it all.
Peace!
